Seeds of Greatness! E-mail

Yesterday we had our first watermelon of the spring. It was not a locally grown watermelon but one we bought in the store.  It still tasted really good. As we were eating the watermelon one of my daughters asked; “How come there are so many seeds in the watermelon?”

Ah! Another chance for a life lesson...Seeds of Greatness!

My daughter counted 18 seeds in her piece of watermelon and then asked how many total seeds would be in the entire watermelon.  We each threw out a guess… 362…255…501…650.  We didn’t actually count them so we don’t know the answer, but then I asked my girls another question… How many watermelons are in one seed? My oldest daughter guessed one.  So I said let’s think about this.

One seed creates a plant that can produce a few watermelons, but what is inside each watermelon? Of course there are more seeds, and therefore, more watermelons. My daughters quickly realized there is potential for an unlimited number of watermelons in a single seed.

Now, I said what happens if we take that seed and put it inside an empty jar, but don’t add any dirt or water? Of course the seed will not grow, and therefore, will not produce any watermelons. But if we plant the seed in fertile soil, and then water it and take care of it by weeding the garden and fertilizing the seed, we can reap a harvest of an unlimited amount of watermelons over time. Pretty cool!

Do you know the same principles apply to your life? God has placed seeds of greatness inside of you, but you have to plant yourself in some fertile soil, which means you have to bury yourself in some dirt. A lot of people want to be successful but they are afraid to take the first step towards success because they are afraid they will get dirty…that things won’t work out…that they might mess something up.  So they put their talents and their seeds of greatness in an empty glass jar and proceed to produce nothing. How can you plant yourself in the dirt without getting dirty? Success takes work and when you work, you’re going to get dirty. Oh, but the rewards of doing so are great!

So take your dreams and goals and plant them. Write them down and figure out how you can get them into some fertile soil. It will take time and effort and you will get dirty, but, I guarantee if you don’t plant the seed of your dream, it won’t ever come to fruition. The potential will be there, but until you plant the seed, get it dirty, and do some work, it won’t ever produce a darn thing.

I know the next thing you are going to say is… I will do that when…(fill in your challenge or obstacle). There is no perfect time to start. We all have challenges in life and we can allow those challenges to stop us or to propel us to new heights.

See one of the best things to help grow a watermelon is a thing called fertilizer.  Do you know what fertilizer really is?  It is called manure, which is really just a bunch of ‘crap’ from someone or something else.  So think about this… the more crap you are going through in life, the more fertilizer you have to grow your dreams and goals more quickly. So stop complaining about the crap in your life and start using it as fertilizer to succeed.

When you plant your dream it won’t produce $1 million overnight.  At first the dream will start to grow and then produce 2-3 watermelons. And inside those watermelons are more seeds that you can plant and they will grow more watermelons and more watermelons and so forth. Pretty soon you could have hundreds of acres of watermelons that all started with one tiny little seed that you chose to plant in some fertile soil. You watered it, you added fertilizer (crap) to it, and you weeded it. And because you did the work to take care of it, you will reap incredible rewards beyond your wildest imagination.

So go plant your dreams…get dirty…use the crap in your life as fertilizer…and grow into the dreams you have in your heart!

What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?
