Question
“I’m looking for the courage to leave a company that I’ve been working for for 17 years. I like the company but I really want to startup my own business next year. How exactly do you recommend that I transition from my job to my own business?”
Expert Answer
You need to have your own project before you leave the company. You cannot just jump off a train, specially as the train hasn’t stopped, and then expect to stand on your feet. You need to take the first steps carefully, slowly but surely in order to establish something you can stand on before you jump off that train. And don’t be too worried about loyalty to the company. Loyalty is extremely important but how many loyal people get dismissed every single day? People who have dedicated their lives to companies and then when those companies get restructured or however they might want to call it, the people lose their jobs.
So you need - first of all you need to be loyal to yourself. You need to be loyal to your family and you need to be loyal to your goals and your vision. You’ve got only one life and in this life you need to make the most out of it and I doubt whether you will be able to make the most out of your life as long as you dedicated 100% to another company.
