Question

How have you learned how to deal with negative people?

Expert Answer

How do I deal with negative people? Well I look at myself. I look in the mirror because negative people many times reflect only the people they’re speaking with. So instead of asking, “Why are they so negative?” I ask myself, “What did I do to make them so negative?” And “What can I do to make them more positive?”

Sometimes a smile might be enough. Somebody comes up to me and complains and wants to complain about everything. Why things are not working. Why he or she didn’t sell? And the market is terrible and whatever. Well first of all I listen, I smile. I let the person talk, and then I ask a question that necessarily leads to a positive answer. Because every question has already an answer kind of included.

So you must be very careful with the questions you ask. By asking the wrong question that will turn that person even more - make the person more negative. By asking the right question it can turn the person completely around and kind of break that pattern. Or make it a joke to get this person out of that negative mode. To think about something totally different. You might even bring up something that is totally unrelated to the present conversation to totally distract the person from his or her misery and to start speaking about something positive.
