Question
“I have great ideas but I’m constantly held back by a lack of self confidence. What can I do to build up my belief in myself so that I can approach everything I do with self-confidence?”
Expert Answer
Wow! This is a very difficult question. How you can approach everything you do with confidence? I think it’s almost impossible unless you are Superman. I mean we are all humans and there are certain that things that scare all of us differently. Maybe you are not afraid to speak in public, and somebody else is not afraid to jump off a bridge, but we are all different and there will always be situations that we are afraid. And luckily it is like that because if nobody was afraid of anything then the competition would be way too much.
We always should realize that other people are scared as well, but they somehow did it or they’re doing it so why shouldn’t you be able to do it as well? That is one way of motivating yourself. One way how I motivate myself. If I have a difficult and a challenging task in front of me I look at those people who have done it before. Who were able to do it. Who were able to survive it and to grow rich.
So I say to myself, “If they did it why shouldn’t I be able to do it? Let’s try.” And then again you ask yourself two questions. “How much can I win by doing it and by achieving it?” And the other question is “How much can I lose? What is the best that can happen and what is the worst that can happen?”
When you answer those questions honestly you come to the conclusion that in most cases it’s not that much that you can lose. Sometimes it’s only your fear of what other people might think about your actions that holds you back. It’s not even yourself, it’s your thought of what other people might think. But first of all most other people don’t care anyway so why should you care what they think? Just go for it and follow Richard Branson’s slogan on his latest book, Screw it, Let’s do it.
