The 3 Biggest Mistakes on the Road to Making it Big E-mail

The road to success is exciting and at the same time nerve-wracking. Trying to make all the right moves is ideal but impossible. Inevitably, there will be highs and lows. Recognizing some of the common mistakes people make on the road to making it big can help you avoid them yourself. Or at least respond quickly should you hit a pitfall.

In an interview recently with Mathias Schmelz we discussed the biggest mistakes people make on their own road to success.

1. Procrastination

Making it big means taking on big projects.  Taking on big projects can lead to procrastination.  And it's tough to get ahead when procrastinating.  The key is to start somewhere.  Anywhere.  Take each big project you have and break it down into little, more manageable pieces.  No matter how small each step may seem - it counts.  And now you're no longer procrastinating on your great idea.  Take this process further by freely writing or drawing to loosen and relax your mind.

2. Letting fear take over

Ever wonder what the naysayers are going to think about you making it big?  Well, don't worry about it.  One of the biggest hindrances to success is the fear of what others will think about what we're doing along the way.  In reality, most people don't care what we're up to - they have their own lives to worry about.  This leaves us free to do whatever we wish.  So now you can weigh the risks and the benefits to decide your course.

Still fearful of what others will say?  That's okay.  To some degree, a healthy dose of fear keeps us in check. Remember, if it keeps us in check it also keeps our competition in line.   Don't forget to check out successful people who are doing what you want to do.  Study their techniques and figure out how they overcome obstacles.  Study their methods and adopt what works for you.

3. Feeling guilty

Want to be your own boss but feel guilty leaving your company?  First and foremost, successful people are loyal to themselves.  When they see opportunities they grab them.

This doesn't mean quit your job first and develop your own project second.  It does mean having your plan in place before taking big leaps.  As Matthias Schmelz points out, we cannot jump from a moving train and expect to land on our feet.  Have your plan in place to account for the bumps and scrapes you might experience when you do decide to take that leap.
